Illuminations 2011

As I lay in bed tonight after a long day’s work in holiday crazed retail-land, many times images of the day or, of things that inspire me, emerge from the darkness. My mind is on my installation at the SomArts. I like to dream about how nice it would be if I could be there right NOW visiting regularly with my altar which is dedicated to the memory of my maternal grandfather and to my younger brothers service. I admire the way people in Latin America hang out and have picnics in cemeteries.Holidays and rituals are a way of slowing down and being present, which is something I strive for. Some may call it praying or meditation. To art lovers, it can be about being in the presence of some awe inspiring work that whisks you out of your everyday dull-drums and brings you closer to your own animalistic need for communication and self-expression.

I had a great time at this opening for the Illuminations exhibit. I also met lots of energizing arts-folks that gave me good feed back on my own work and the San fran art scene. I am grateful for even being able to make time to go into the city let alone get my dedicate myself truly to art marketing business end of "making it" as an artist. I'm too much of an art hermit but I'm working on it! It helps me, and fills my little artistic heart with pride, that I believe in this organization and their commitment to the mission district not just as an arts hub but as a grassroots community.
I hope you all make it out to other cultural events at SomArts such as the Feast of Words literary potluck which the center hosts once a month.

The calm before the ASUCAR!

It’s t-minus three hours before the start of the 13th annual SomArts Dead of the Dead festival! This year there are 80 artists from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of receiving my docent training for the event. Luckily, since it was the day before the opening, many artists were on site giving their installations, wall paintings, and altars some last minute loves.

Please note, I tried to credit each picture with the artist and a brief description but apparently, I do not blog enough to wade through the HTML to make it look right. If you have any questions about specific pictures feel free to ask.

I’d like to share with you some progress shots of the various embodiments of this year’s theme Illuminations. We are expecting quite the turn out this evening and this month of October with return patrons that have followed this event from infancy as well as, the fleet week crowd, all the new transplants to the bay area, (such as myself) and of course the cultured San Fransisco populous at large who knows a fine great community event when they see one.
Again, many thanks to the hardworking crew of SomArts such as father and son duo curators Rene Yañez & Rio Yañez, Debra, Jess, Sally, contributing Artists, and all the lighting, sound, tech, and volunteer help that make such a grand community event possible.

Illuminations

It’s hard to believe summer is almost gone especially while enjoying the consistently beautiful climate of Redwood City. This little village’s claim to fame is proudly displayed on its Caltrain platform “climate best by government test”.

Despite the agreeable weather a girl can not live by sunshine alone and so I try to wander into “the city” San Francisco, in order to get my cultural mojo going.
In October I am participating in Illuminations: Día de los Muertos 2011 Exhibition, which runs October 8–November 5, 2011. I will be showing an installation consisting of a traditional Mexican day of the dead altar, dedicated to the memory of my maternal grandfather Ulysses Ugalde Uglade as well as, a painting using my brother and I as archetypes exploring universal themes of societal and existential angst.
I am thrilled to participate as an artist and volunteer for this organization which upholds values of cultural belonging, LGBT awareness, and community outreach through the unifying powers of art. salty & sweet boys of the sea

4"x6"in watercolor drawing of two lovely gay mermen on arches watercolor paper. The development of this image has been influenced by the Japanese kuai cute pop culture style and western notions of mermaids and faeries.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the influence of environment on our perceptions of self and others. The visible and unseen effects of culture and a how a person's psychological development is guided by the familial, all seem to still be peculating since finishing my degree.
In the process of drawing, I seemed to be fighting a bit with the darker merman who's expression which came out more frightened and with a demur shyness than I had not expected. I like them and I was quite surprised by the end result. Clearly these two salty boys have colorful stories to tell my client in his dreams.

I'm currently practicing making smaller works. This miniaturization of my current work is being off set by being part of an illustration project in Portland and a artist portrait trade.

Hello there online art journal readers! It’s been a long while since I’ve updated my blogspot but I’m here to share with you my very first art project since moving to our new digs in the California bay area.
First I must say the daily exposure to sunshine and vitamin D has done wonders for my naturally gloomy artistic temperament. Also having a simple low stress job at an art and framing store is not too shabby either. It really does feel like summer and I hope to ride this refreshing wave of creativity into the fall.

The image was created with the invent to be donated to the Carlsbad ArtSplash which is an annual non-profit event who’s mission is to bring together the North County community to raise funds for arts, music and the North county schools. The cultural event hosts various artists with chalk art street paintings, live art, an art auction, musicians, street entertainers, and performing artists, and delectable food set in a spectacular venue overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The piece is a hand painted acrylic illustration of a mermaid listening to a seashell. In her magenta and purple environment she has a seahorse at 9 o’clock, anchor at 3 o’clock , and her trusted black fish-cat at 6 o’clock.

I wanted this image to evoke a feeling of calm and optimism which as one may feel when we realize that we have everything we need all ready. Now what to title this little art object? I think the title of "Mermaid blossoms in the moment" will suit it fine.

The banner to her right reads “Hear blessings dropping their blossoms all around you” which is an excerpt from a poem by the 12th century Sufi poet Rumi.

Since the art object is intended to be a functional and utilitarian item such as a clock, I couldn’t help it and added a touch of awareness of the present moment to the image’s overall mood.

At last the art swap cards are here! My cards arrived and I am mighty pleased with these lovely miniature works in my hot little hands. Check them out! At artists from top left to right are as follows: Stephanie Aliberti (NY); Melanie Glassey (PA); Diane Menna (NY); and Poppy Terris (FL).

What really strikes me is how well these small works read. The compositions are unique, visually appealing, and have their own symbolic narrative. Now that I have my cards I realize I made mine smaller in width. It is time to invest in a ruler and not use the measuring tape for paper projects. Oh, no! Another trip to the art supply store, best buy required textbooks for this term first!
I feel lucky to have stumbled this opportunity to participate in a community building project. Thanks again to the organizer Melanie Glassey and to all you hard working creative folks who participated in the Art Therapy Alliance 2nd ATC swap.

A wrinkle in time, is just fine by me

Artists are known to be messy. In fact authors go to great lengths to romanticize and glamorize the ‘starving artists struggle’. Today, while getting some supplies for an upcoming show, I wrote on my hand the name of a book I was having a hard time putting down it was Inside the Painter’s Studio by Joe Fig. Basically Fig goes around to various artists and ask them a battery of questions about their studio practices, how and when they dedicated themselves full time to art, how long they've been in their studio, and the process of their work. I just hope the school library or summit has it because I’d love some art literary candy.

I have just about finished organizing my studio/ library room. There has been a good amount of workable materials that have surfaced and I’m fighting the urge to bring them all with me to school next week. Needless to say, I am greatly anticipating the Practicum Studio class. I skimmed the syllabus of the class and I already like the assignments, this bodes well. Here are two sketches in pastel chalk on colored construction paper. My cats were characteristically interested in what I was doing so I drew them.

These are sketches on black rag board. The structure and tooth of a surface really does make a huge difference and these did not hold up well until I sprayed the image down with some workable spray fixative.

A great escape with watercolors

This summer I drew in watercolors during a quick trip out of the city with a fellow art therapy student and published poet Paula. She and I went out east toward the Colombia Gorge and observed the lay of land from a hill top at the Women’s Forum. This impromptu art happening gave me a fresh look making art out in the open, out in nature, away from the consumerism that can be the livelihood or bane of any artist. There we had time to take note of the timeless beauty intrinsic to this Pacific Northwest region. We found ourselves a sunny spot and were fortunate to meet members of the Portland Plein Air Society. They painted painterly landscapes in oils on French easels whilst Paula and I gave it a go with watercolors, sepia ink pens, and charcoal on scrap paper from a print exchange.

The paper is Arches watercolor paper and is 4.5” x 20”. A panoramic landscape seemed to be just right for these left over bits of paper. Armed with a big sunhat, a water bottle, and an anxiety free disposition I put my inner art critic aside a just had fun. There is something really calming that happens to me when I just allow myself to be present in nature it is a beautiful thing, try it!

Art card swap #2

I recently participated in my first art therapy-artist trading card swap. I was once again gently reminded by this activity of the awesome power of making spontaneous art. Truly art gives us what we need to survive emotionally and spiritually. Despite being a dedicated studio artist I feel that I’m often asleep to what I really need inside. Yet this simple and meaningful task reminded me of what I do best which is to create from within.

Am happy with how my cards turned out and I am a bit surprised at how peaceful they look. The themes that emerged within my cards are those that seem to have stuck with me during my graduate training thus far which are keeping a drawing journal, breathing, listening, and observing. The guiding theme for the artist trading card swap was collage unleashed so I brought it back to some old school fun by scanning three dimensional objects ( including my face), collaged items, packing tape, text in black ball point pen, and of course some iridescent fabric glitter.

In the art swap artists were instructed to make 4 cards, no bigger than business card size and they would in turn receive four cards. 74 participants involved in art therapy in one way or another participated from across the U.S. including Australia and Canada. Melanie Glassey practicing art therapist & artist was kind enough to coordinate this project. To Melanie and my brothers and sisters in art I extend a heartfelt thank you.

You will be pleased to know we will be doing an art card swap similar to this among our art therapy cohort this fall.

5 HR Encasutics Workshop led by Carolina & Natalie.

The encaustic workshop led on Wednesday was a success! It looked like everyone enjoyed the process and were thirsty for an art experiential. Many thanks to Paula for hosting this meeting in her stunning backyard plein-air studio and to my co-leader Natalie who introduced our group to modern variations of the encaustic technique and provided hand outs for the participants. Thank you all for enthusiasm and eagerness to learn this art process.

A step in the graduate direction

This image is of a watercolor drawing from my journal during my brief stay in Kauai, Hawaii earlier this year. It's titled chicken and papayas.

Many wonderful and exciting things are happening in my artistic life. Some of which have been several months in the making such as getting ready for graduate school! I will be attending Marylhurst University to pursue a degree in M.A Art Therapy Counseling. I’m so excited! I applied for and received a Miller Foundation Art Therapy Scholarship so that has put a bit of wind beneath my wings. Encouragement is always welcome.

I’ll be leaving the security of my 9-5 at PAM but I’m ready to take this next step in my professional development. My tenure at the museum these last three years has taught me lessons in patience, flexibility, altruism, and above all always bring the beauty of art into my everyday life.

Eventually with parental/ guardian consent I will be posting pictures from my internship with the special patient population in Aloha. In the mean time, I’m going to finish up here at work and go out and see some first Thursday openings.

Conflux 2009 NW Dark Art Festival

The two day event (SEPT 25 & 26TH) features many well known musicians, local DJ’s, fashion designers, sensual beauties, workshops, and digital artshow. This event was curated by the lovely Stephanie Ryan. Painting with an audience and musicians was loads of fun and I look forward to more live painting action. Not only was this a great exercise, it gave me a chance to give up some control.

At long last here are some shots of the art and attendees of Dark Bohemian Carnival art and music show Jan 2nd – April 2nd 2009. It was held at Vino Vixens in SE Portland. It was an honor to work with such talented and dedicated artists. I am pleased to have been able to show their work in this alternative venue with tasty wine and to have also have had the good fortune to have live musicians enriching the experience with their craft. This art and wine event will be held at Vino Vixens, a wine bar on SE Powell in Portland, Ages 21+. Admission is free.

The Dark Bohemian Carnival, is a multi-media show with 20 artists contributing original works of art, is revelry in mesmerizing art and music that fosters the spirit of community and creativity. Participants are predominately from the Portland metro area but some of the contributors such are also sending their work from abroad, such as Zach Bohenkamp (Seattle, WA), Jesse Schafer (Vancouver, WA), and Kristen Katz (Las Vegas, NV) especially for our celebration.

We are all coming together for The Dark Bohemian Carnival, to ring in the New Year with open hearts and foster lasting ties among our community at large. Come join us for the opening festivities that will reflect the mission of this salon style exhibition: showcase works of art by established and emerging artists that exhibit a dark romantic aesthetic. In this show there is an infinite spectrum of works that elicit an emotional response. A group show of spectacular multi-media work; the fields of Photography, Printmaking, Encaustic Oil, Charcoal Rendering, Assemblage, and Music all will be present.

For this show, my inspiration to do a carnival theme arose from the inspiring suite of prints on display in the Making Merry exhibit of the Portland Art Museum. How could I not be moved into action by the printed image of giants? The show is reminiscent of how artists through the ages have sought to capture the essence of the performers and animals' life in the circus. I interpret those iconic images of elephants, tigers, trapeze acrobats, and harlequins, to mirror the ups and downs of the human condition.

Ambient Awakenings

The Ambient Awakenings night has existed in Portland for a few stretches over the last four years. It has hosted a monthly showcase of local NW acts at the wine bar since this summer. The lineup builds from an ambient drift early in the eve to down/mid-tempo beats later night. This month brings sounds on a darker tip to accompany the art.
We start out with a series of short, live ambient sets from Devon, Panegyric Delay, and Show & Tell. Straddling the transition from ambient gltich to downbeat is Ben Milstein, better known for his up tempo releases on Andrea Parker's Touchin' Bass. DJ Waatermark wraps it IDM/glitch style.

David Rolin

David Rolin is veteran percussionist. Rolin’s fifty years of experience has created a wellspring of influences and musical nuances that have shaped his unique style. His arrival to the Portland music community 20 years ago marked the beginning of his hard-hitting tribal rock sound. He draws heavily from afro-funk influences which result in a greasy, voodoo sound that you can cut with a knife. Rolin was one of Gypsy Caravan’s original members and has gone on to play with diverse musical acts such as Sumo, The Rotating Leslies, Munkitung, Full Brazil, and Dhomba, to name but a few. He has played countless local venues from Satyricon to “The Schnitz”. His choice of visceral ethnic beats experienced with a decided urban attitude create a rhythmic foundation for any setting. His music has been described as consistently stimulating, evocative, and decisively original.

Terry Toedtemeir, rest in peace

I am deeply saddened to have found out one of my colleagues at the Portland Art Museum, Terry Toedtemeier Curator of Photographer died last night. He was one of the all time sweetest men I've ever met. He was jovial, kind, intelligent, passionate about photography, and just an all around exceptional human being. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His legacy exhibition features rare photographs from the Columbia River Gorge many of these photographs have never been displayed publicly.

MURALS TOWN HALL: DEC 16, 2008

- I am going to this meeting because I think its ridiculous we live in a city that is lauded for its art community and yet has such strict guidelines for creation of public works.

at the VINO VIXENS WINE BAR

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Artist Carolina is currently accepting art work from established and emerging artists for a three month exhibition opportunity at Vino Vixens Wine Bar, located at 2929 SE Powell in Portland Oregon. Artist reception and opening will be held on Friday January 2^nd 2009 from 7pm till midnight. The evening will include live music, guest Dj's, installations, artwork, sales of artwork, and Vino Vixens award winning wines for sale. Submissions are encouraged by all artists. Artists may submit up to three works of art. Site specific installations will also be considered. Selected artists will need to contribute $10 for the cost of printing show cards.

FRAMING: All works must be framed in a gallery ready frame All framed works must be ready to hang with firm frames, sturdy screw eyes and strong wire.

ELIGIBLE WORKS: Paintings, Prints (lithography, etchings and woodcuts), Photographs, Pen and Inks, Sculptures in the round or relief, public appropriate Video Art, and Site Specific Installations with detailed description of type materials to be installed

LIMITATION: Artwork maybe a maximum 62 inches (5ft 2inches) including frame. Maximum weight 30 lbs. . Site specific installations will also be considered. The venue has high ceilings, dimensions for installations can be no greater than 7ft high by 5 ft wide by 4 ft deep.

CD DIGITAL ENTRIES: Digital entry format must be JPEG. Image not to exceed height or width of 800 pixels and should be 300 dpi. JPEG must be filed with artist's name. Submitted either to email or sent via mail. Write on CD artist's name, title of work, medium and size. Include a hard copy color printout and art resume. Send CD, Entry Label, and resume to:

Here I am with my submission to our museum staff show. The piece is a collage made from a collagraph print I made and a calender picture of a Hokusai woodblock. I was happy to hang my work on a different find of surface, instead of the standard white flawless wall this neutral bare wall is concave and one of several donated by Portland Center Stage. My camera is not happy right now with its purple stripe on the side but it's what I have and it'll do until I can get another one. I may have to start using my film camera again. Gasp!

I’m excited to be here breaking in this new virtual space! I will speak out aloud, fleshing out my ideas for projects and respond to stimuli from the around the world around me. To show this will not be a dry toast bread ‘art blog’ I will also share my writing, my journal drawings on occasion, and of course the development of various personal works.

Let me speak in rain drops

Let them whisper

Heart beats,

Children chattering,

Dreams untold

Sinking deeper

I am close

Enough to taste

She is everywhere

I am there

With her

A newborn awoken in haste

I can feel the wind blowing

Sweetly

From the room across the hall

The axe blade slipping in his teeth

Red candle wax was dripping

Fractal patterns on my skin

I am naked in the garden delighting in my sin

From beneath and from above

I reached for that apple

Then the storm it came

Into wooden long boats we were cast

Nevertheless she undressed
